Biographie Ask a Makeup Artist: Do Fake Lashes Ruin Your Real Ones?

If you’re researching lash extensions or falsies, it’s probably because you want fuller, longer lashes. It’s no surprise that one of the biggest concerns about these lash enhancements is whether they harm natural lashes. If you’ve been wondering if your favorite pair of fake lashes will ruin your real ones, you’re in the right place.

ARTICLE AT A GLANCE

In this article, we discuss the potential damage extensions and fake lashes can cause to your real lashes. We also discuss other risks and how to prevent them.

Fake lashes may cause a bit of damage to the natural lashes, but it’s rare. Usually, the damage is caused by incorrect usage. The lash fall is usually reversible.

Lash extensions are more likely to have harmful effects on lashes and eyes. These are usually a result of allergies or of poor training.

As long as you stick to good hygiene practices, reputable salons, consistent aftercare, and proper removal, your real lashes will keep on looking their best!

WILL FAKE LASHES DAMAGE REAL LASHES?

False eyelashes are incredibly popular. They’re a temporary eyelash enhancement that sticks to the lash line with latex or acrylate-based adhesive. But can fake lashes ruin your real ones?

The good news is that false lashes, when used properly, won’t damage your eyelashes at all! It’s only when you over-apply glue or pull the lashes off aggressively, that some lashes may get caught and pulled out.

Never pull your lashes off when it’s time to remove them. Instead, peel them off gently with the help of makeup remover and a cotton swab.

As long as you don’t use too much adhesive, your natural lashes will remain perfectly intact. If you use falsies instead of mascara, they might even help keep your lashes healthier!

Some sources theorize that the weight of the falsies over your real lashes may have repercussions. But it’s a theory, and as many avid falsie-wearers will attest (especially the ones using our Natural Lashes), it doesn’t seem to be a real issue.

WILL LASH EXTENSIONS RUIN REAL LASHES?

As any eyelash technician will tell you, one of the most frequent questions they hear is whether extensions damage real lashes. The answer, depending on who you ask, is either “it depends” or “maybe.”

Eyelash loss is most likely to occur during incorrect removal. If you attempt to remove your extensions by yourself, the risk of pulling on your natural lashes is higher, and you’re likely to lose quite a few.

There hasn’t been any research on the impact of eyelash extensions on natural lashes. Some technicians hypothesize that after removal, the lashes seem more sparse because the client has gotten used to the voluminous extensions. Once the extensions are gone, the difference can seem stark.

There are some theories behind how extensions could potentially damage lashes, but they’re not proven. It’s possible that the weight of the extensions puts stress on the lashes and temporarily inhibits their growth, especially with voluminous styles. It’s also possible that oil and debris buildup from improper cleaning can damage the hair follicle. Whether these issues are significant enough to cause lash fall is entirely unknown.

The good news is that even if the extensions slightly damage your lashes, they will grow back. Human eyelashes go through a regular growth cycle. If you feel like you lost more lashes than normal, they’ll replace themselves within a few months.

The Beginner's Guide to Eyelash Extensions

“Lash extensions are semi-permanent synthetic, faux mink or silk fibers which are applied strand by strand to your natural lashes,” explains Richardson. As you might expect, the application is fairly tedious. “The extensions are carefully applied one at a time using a specially-formulated, semi-permanent glue that will not irritate or damage the natural lash,” she adds.

Unlike false eyelashes, where the strip or individual lashes are applied to the skin, lash extensions are attached directly to the lash itself. The results are more lush, dense lashes that may even let you skip mascara (gasp).

The final look is meant to enhance your natural lashes with more length, fullness, and lift. Whether that look is more dramatic or more natural is up to the client, but generally, the more lashes applied, the more dramatic the effect. A typical treatment involves anywhere from 80-140 individual extensions per eye, with lashes ranging in length from 6-18mm, according to Richardson. “It’s not one size fits all,” she explains. “For instance, if you have damaged lashes, or naturally weak, short natural lashes, it’s not always possible to get a more dramatic look that a client with stronger, thicker lashes can achieve.”

The bad news? Expect the treatment to take one to two hours, depending on your desired look. The good news? You can use it as an excuse to lie down, relax, and take a forced break from your phone.

A good lash technician will take their time, reminds Richardson. “Safety should be your number-one concern. Finding someone who is certified to apply the lashes is a must. Depending on the state, the stylist also needs to be licensed,” she advises.

What is the difference between strip lashes vs eyelash extensions?

Strips lashes are lashes that are attached shaped to a crescent band that can be put on to the lash lid in one piece and can be removed on demand. Whereas eyelash extensions, are individually applied lash hairs that are professionally applied with long wear adhesive (lasts weeks) and allows for extended wear and no daily removal.

Eyelash extensions are semi-permanent false lashes individually applied using glue that should only be applied by a professionally trained lash technician; this is a much stronger adhesive. So what's the difference you say? Well friends, let me give you the tea.

Eyelash extensions are more expensive than strip lashes and depends on the rates of the lash technician you decide on.

On average lash technician starts their prices from $150 USD to $200 USD and maintenance starts at ~$55 USD. The lash technician may charge more for eyelash extensions because of the lash material applied. Lash hairs can be made of silk, human, mink, or horse hair. Eyelash extensions require daily maintenance such as cleaning and fluffing to promote longer lash life. Lash extensions can last about ~3 weeks with proper care, and you should plan to visit your lash technician approximately every three weeks or per the direction of your lash technician.

An appointment to do eyelash extensions takes about 2- 3 hours to be done, and this is for a complete set to be done. Lash technicians also offer refills which are when only a couple of lashes are missing or when your lashes have grown out, the extension placed on your actual lash. There are another 50-55 dollars you are spending to get a refill.

Eyelash extensions naturally fall off during their life cycle. After the eyelash extension appointment, lash techs will instruct you to keep them dry within the first day or two.

As a friendly reminder, remember when going to get eyelash extensions to schedule with a licensed technician. Going to an unlicensed person can be risky and potential harm to your eyes. Here are some watch-outs iwhen getting your eyelash extensions:

Look for tools are properly cleaned or sterilized, this is how you can get pink eye.

Improperly applied extensions can cause injury. If your technician is not certified you risk getting an infection on your eyelids or cornea.

Be aware and watch for possible allergic reactions to the adhesive. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include eye irritation, burning, itching, and bloodshot eyes. Please see a doctor if you are experiencing these symptoms.

If at any point you feel discomfort, reach out to your lash technician and review if you need to have them removed immediately before experiencing any additional symptoms.

Eyelash extensions are applied to your natural lashes, and can cause you to lose some of your natural lashes.

Cluster Lashes: An Outdated Technique to Avoid at All Cost
The eyelash extension industry is constantly evolving as our knowledge improves. It is important to keep up with the most updated information and state-of-the-art technique if you want what’s best for the health of your natural lashes.

In this case, cluster lashes (also called flare lashes) were popular 10-15 years ago, but we now know they should be avoided at all costs.

Cluster lashes will cause damage to your natural lashes because they are too heavy and attached to multiple natural lashes at once. Because too much glue is used for the application, when the cluster lashes fall off, they will pull out your natural lashes. This will cause your natural lashes to thin and create bald spots.

Cluster lashes (also known as flares) were popular over 10 years ago.

5 to 10 fairly thick extensions, usually 0.15s were tied together at the base, and the fan-shaped “flares” were glued onto 2 to 3, sometimes more, natural lashes.

For example, using 10 cluster lashes that are made of 10 thick extensions would result in 100 extensions attached to one eye.

Many lash salons loved it because it would increase the number of clients they can take, and thus their sales, while achieving a dramatic look.

The technique was a lot easier compared to single eyelash extensions application as it does not require precise isolation of the natural lashes. Cluster lashes were not as time-consuming as the single lash extensions.

Because cluster lashes were attached to multiple natural lashes, and often all the flares on an eye were glued together to form a big fan, the flares would interfere with the growth cycle of the natural lashes.

Also because so much glue was used for the application, when the flares fell off, it would often pull out quite a few natural lashes, causing the natural lashes to thin, and create bald spots.

Back in the day, the eyelash extensions industry was still new, and most eyelash stylists had no knowledge of the eyelash growth cycle and how natural lashes could potentially be damaged through eyelash extensions procedures.

The Pros and Cons of Magnetic Lashes vs False Eyelashes

Magnetic lashes are the latest trend to captivate the makeup world, but do they stand up versus standard fake lashes? There’s a rising trend of celebrities going makeup-free in public, but we’re not ready to give up wearing makeup just yet! Magnetic lashes are the latest trend to captivate the makeup world. They offer solutions to running glue and false lashes that aren’t stuck on properly, which are both things girls do that makeup artists can’t stand. But are they really a better option? We weigh up the pros and cons below!
One of the biggest upsides to magnetic lashes is that they are far less messy than traditional false lashes. Because the lashes stick to your skin via the magnetized component rather than with glue, you don’t have to worry about getting adhesive all over your eyes and fingers. A classic makeup mistake made by people who are not ready to go professional is applying too much glue to traditional false lashes, which can really get messy.
Those who have worn both traditional false lashes and magnetic lashes claim that traditional fakes tend to feel sturdier than magnetic lashes. With some magnetized lashes, there can be the annoying feeling that the lashes are going to fall off, which is the last thing anyone needs when they’re out and about! Because of the adhesive used to stick false lashes to the skin, they often feel more secure, leaving wearers feeling more comfortable. On the other hand, magnetic lashes can last longer because they require less handling when it comes to cleaning and picking out the dried glue residues.
There are both pros and cons to magnetic lashes, which are currently taking the makeup world by storm. One of the pros that makeup gurus love is that you can wear magnetic lashes more than once. While false lashes can also be used again, the glue tends to bend them out of shape or make them look grotty. You don’t typically have that problem with magnetic lashes, which are as easy to remove as they are to apply.
